"Your families safety is number one."

The internet is not a safe place for your children or teens.  Regardless of what you have heard, blogs or web logs, instant messenger, and chat room are not safe.  Children and adults have a tendency to provide TMI (too much information) when posting on these sites. A simple search of one popular blog reveals over 900 young people in this zip code most giving details that could make them a target.  Most claim to be at least 18 years old and then in the first line of their profile give their real age.  "My name is Susie I go to Springfield middle school and I am really 13 years old."  That is just one example. Then they continue to add their likes and dislikes.  Several use language that is totally out of line and would make a sailor blush.  Many take sexually pointed surveys and post the results.  Questions like: If you were candy, what kind would you be? Do you drink? Have you ever been drunk? Do you smoke? Have your ever been in love? Are you a virgin? Have your ever had sex? In the past month have you had sex? How many times? The answers will surprise you. Sexually explicit poses and even nudity in posted pictures is not an uncommon occurrence.   A username and password is required to access the different levels, so do not be fooled if your child or teen shows you his or her blog and you see nothing, more could be beneath the surface.   What can you do? Write the major advertisers on these blogs tell them how shocked you are to see their logo’s on pages such unsupervised blogs.  By advertising on these sites they appear to be promoting and condoning the behavior, let them know how you feel about that..  If these sites lose advertising dollars because of a public outcry they will police their communities better.   Recent public pressure has forced yahoo.com to police their blogs.  They have ended many groups that had perverted themes. It appears that they will continue to try to clean up their site.  In our option it is by no means safe for your children to blog there or anywhere else, but it is still improved from where it was a year ago.
